Pronounced “Vavil,” this was another interesting tour of “old” that I’m still trying to wrap my mind around. Parts of the castle date back to the 11th century! Walking through the main square, the corridors, the state rooms, and the ball room I was imagining all of the women walking through with their flowing gowns. The no photos indoors rule was killing me (as was carrying Lena around the whole day...). The decor in some of these rooms was amazing! The fact that so much of it had survived through time alone not to mention the invasions of German soldiers who occupied the castle as ‘barracks’ during the 2nd world war is incredible! My favorite part was the detailed ceilings, Lena loved them too—she would stare straight up at the painted ceilings! We also toured the cathedral on Wawel hill which was incredibly ornate and full of history. Touring the ‘crypts’ was a little creepy :).
We climbed up the most narrow staircase I’ve ever been on up into the bell tower of the church. I now understand why The Hunchback was a hunchback—he had to crouch in those stairs all day! What a view from the top of the tower!
There is a legend that if you touch the bell’s clapper with your left hand your wish will come true.
Your other left Dave.
View of Krakow from the tower.
