Apple Days in Julian

Dave had some unexpected time off in October so we hopped in the car and headed 2 hours away to Julian, a gorgeous little old town that has maintained its mining and apple growing 1800s charm.  We stayed one night at a beautiful lodge and had busy days on either side.
On the first day we enjoyed the mining tour at "Smith Ranch" --fantastic!
We picked and ate actual sugar plums :)

Our train and conductor/tour guide--he was hillarious!

We actually got to take  few steps into an actual gold mine from the gold rush days.  Lena got to ride in the cart and wear the helmet ;)

She learned how to pump water...
...and pan for gold!  Then she traded in her gold at the trading post for red vines :)

She even got to cross the rope bridge!  She was a super star on it!
We even got to try to pick up a 'gold brick' as compared to a cement brick!
That night we went to the town "melodrama" production.  Really cute and Lena was fascinated by the dancing girls--and they loved her!  She is still talking about the "princesses" (as she calls them--and anyone else in a dress or skirt) because they gave her a garter and a feather from a boa!

This was the gorgeous lodge we stayed at.  Dave really enjoyed his morning tea on the proch overlooking the valley.

In the morning we headed out for some apple picking--pretty picked over by this time, but we managed to find a bag full!  Yum!

Before our yummy buffalo burgers lunch we took a very informative carriage ride around the town.
Our last activity of the busy weekend was some more panning for gold and gems at "The Julian Mining Company"--we bought a bag of ore for Lena to sift through..she found some good stuff!

A great weekend..I love our family days.  We need some more :)
